Life At The Bridge 02-27-2020

Have you ever flown a kite? There is something fascinating about how the wind lifts the kite higher and higher into the air. There are several factors that make this flight possible, but one we rarely think about is the string. We might be tempted to even think that the string is the one thing limiting the kite. It’s the one thing that keeps the kite from really soaring, right?
But what actually happens if you are flying a kite, then try to set it free by cutting the string? The kite may take off for a second, but it doesn’t go far. Once the tension that caused the kite to resist the wind is gone, the kite loses the thrust/drag ratio needed to keep it aloft. Ultimately gravity takes over and it comes crashing back to the ground.
What does this have to do with anything? Well, sometimes we view God’s “rules” as a limiting factor. We might be tempted to think rules keep us down. But every rule or law is relational. Laws and rules dictate the tension between things. For example, traffic laws are rules that govern the tension between the millions of motorists who all want to get to their destinations as quickly, efficiently and safely as possible.
Sometimes we look at God’s laws, like the Ten Commandments, and they create a tension in us. But maybe that tension isn’t such a bad thing. Maybe we just need to understand how the string pulling the kite down...keeps it aloft. Join us as we continue to discuss the Ten Commandments to discover if they are really holding us back or actually holding us up.
